Conscious Capitalism

Defining a purpose in business and life.

About 2 years ago I attended a town hall meeting for team members where John Mackey Co- Founder and Co- CEO for Whole Foods Market spoke about his thoughts on purpose in business and culture. His words on the subject solidified why I chose to work in marketing at Whole Foods Market.  My search in where to work started with the thought that I wanted to work for a company with heart and then developed into a clear picture of why a company has a soul and specifically why my gravitation to this company proved to ring true from mission to culture.
In this town hall meeting, John Mackey explained that a company or organization will find success in developing a higher purpose, even beyond conventional norms in business. The myth of maximizing profits for their shareholders and the selfish stereotype that a business should be only there for profit, doesn’t work. John Mackey discovered that more entrepreneurs went into business with passion and purpose as their driving foundation rather than profit.  Purpose is what created the core mindset for Whole Foods Market and what drives culture and mission in partnership with team members, shareholders and customers.
Why is this important? Developing a purpose works for anything in life whether you’d like to start your own business, attain a new goal in health, lead a greener life or consciously use your purchasing power to buy from a business that gives back to humanity. Whole Foods Market core values and giving back such as Whole Planet Foundation, Whole Kids Foundation, Animal Welfare and Whole Trade is what define what we do on a daily basis. Purpose is what activates and motivates us giving us that internal compass to move in the right direction.
