Dry Season

The dry season is here! Dry skin season that is!  Can you feel it?  Is your skin a little more tight, itchy, and dry?

Here are some tips for this season that will help your skin from the inside out:
1. Eat more fish! Especially Salmon, high in fatty acids that help hold moisture in your skin! (You can also add fish oil supplements to your daily regimen.)
2. Apply an oil before you shower! I know it sounds crazy, but it helps coat the skin “sealing” in it’s moisture so it doesn’t evaporate while you’re in the hot shower.  I like avocado oil, jojoba oil, emu oil, anything high in omega’s.
3. Try a honey mask! Natural honey is a great humectant for the skin, just apply it for 10-20 minutes and remove with warm water.
4. Don’t forget to exfoliate! Dead skin cells can’t hold on to moisture, so exfoliate before you apply lotion or moisturizer which will help your skin absorb them. It’s kinda like “raking the leaves before you water the grass”.
5. Don’t forget to get sweaty! That means exercise!! It’s not only good for your body, but our natural sweat has lots of water for our skin! It’s why wearing socks and shoes in the winter get rid of dry or cracked heels.
6.  And my favorite for dry lips…is lanolin.  It’s like a second skin barrier that really help seal and soothe.

For extreme dry skin issues, always seek a professional’s help.  A dermatologist can prescribe powerful humectants and anti-inflammatories when needed.
